PM opens 53-MW power plant at Ashuganj

Dhaka, 30 July, Abnews : Inaugurating a 53-megawatt (MW) public sector power plant here today, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said national grid would get 250-MW imported power from India very soon. She said the present government is working for development of the power sector with patriotism and honesty. We have proved that success is possible if work is done with patriotism and honesty, she said. Our promise to resolve the electricity crisis by reaching power to every household is getting a real shape as private sector companies have responded to our call to invest in this sector, she said.

Sheikh Hasina said her government, if it gets chance to come to power again, would increase the country’s total power generation to 24,000-MW. The Prime Minister also laid foundation stones of five power plants having 1,301-MW generation capacity. The Ashuganj Power Station Company Ltd (APSCL) would implement the project at a cost of US Dollar 613 million with financing under the export credit agency.

PM’s Energy Advisor Dr Towfiq-e-Elahi Chowdhury, State Minister for Energy, Power and Mineral Resources Enamul Haque, State Minister for Law Advocate Kamrul Islam, State Minister for Liberation War Affairs Capt (retd) AB Tajul Islam, RAM Obaidul Muktadir Chowdhury, MP, and Ziaul Haque Mridha, MP, Sayedul Haque, MP, Power Secretary Monwar Islam, APSCL Chairman Md Anwar Hossain and Managing Director Engr M Nurul Alam also spoke on the occasion.

Describing the country’s bleak picture of power generation from 2001 to 2008, the Prime Minister said the Awami League government handed over power in 2001 with daily production capacity of 4,300-MW. But, the capacity declined to 3,200-MW when the party again took office in 2009.

BNP-Jamaat government constructed no power plants in the country, nor they duly conducted the maintenance of the existing plants, she said, adding a total of 55 new power plants were constructed over the last four years and a half raising the production capacity to 8,537-MW.

Sheikh Hasina said 34 power plants with capacity of 6,951-MW are now remained under construction and bidding process for 19 more plants with capacity of 3,974-MW is going on. Pointing out the government initiatives for coal-based power production and agreement with Russia for nuke power, the Prime Minister said the government is also encouraging renewable energy. She said 32 lakh new consumers were given power connections during the present government tenure reaching the coverage about 62 percent. Uninterrupted power supply has been ensured for irrigation, she said.

The Prime Minister urged the people to be efficient in using power and gas saying ‘prudence use by one person would certainly help another to get power. Urging all to compare the successes of the present government with those of the previous government, Sheikh Hasina said the country’s 40 percent people were under the poverty line in 2005 which now declined to 26 percent. Per capita income of people now rose to US$950 from US$630 in 2008. Country’s foreign exchange reserve now stands around US$15 billion from less than US$3 billion in 2008, she said.

The Prime Minister said the country moves forward whenever Awami League comes to power. At the same time, the party always brought honour for the country from abroad. She said Awami League has engaged its full efforts for empowerment of women in the country which was acclaimed by the world community, despite a section of people didn’t like this. Bangladesh is now a role model for socioeconomic development in the world which should be sustained to build a hunger and poverty-free Bangladesh by 2012, she said.
