Pay commission green light Sunday

Abul-Mal-Abdul-MuhitDhaka, 22 November, Abnews : A Permanent Pay Commission for government employees will be announced on Sunday, Finance Minister AMA Muhith has said in Dhaka. The minister gave this assurance at a function organized by the Bangladesh Audit and Accounts Officers’ Association on Friday.

Earlier, on Oct 30, he has said after a meeting with members of the association that a pay commission would be announced by the middle of November for 1.3 million government employees. A separate body called ‘Pay and Services Commission’ would also be formed to spot the disparities among diverse government cadres and services, he had said.

He had said that the Pay Commission Chairman would also head the ‘Pay and Services Commission’, which would last for six months. On Oct 6, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina had announced a flat 20 percent rise in dearness allowance for government employees. She had also announced plans to form a Permanent Pay Commission with the next national election around the corner.

The government issued a gazette notification the next day, granting the dearness allowance with retrospective effect from Jul 1. The 7th Pay Commission was formed in 2007 during the caretaker regime, and government employees last got a hike on Jul 1, 2009.
