In a short reaction to journalists after taking the oath, the new President said ‘Throughout my life I carried on myself a political philosophy (but) as a speaker I discharged neutrally and now I reached in a more neutral place . now I do not belong to any party, I belong to all people of the country’.

The president sought cooperation of all political parties and people of diverse political opinions so that he would put his best efforts to discharge duties following the principles.

Abdul Hamid became the acting president on March 14 in accordance with the constitution after President Zillur Rahman fell sick and was flown to Singapore.

The office of the president fell vacant on March 20 when president Zillur Rahman died of old-age complications at Singapore’s Mount Elizabeth Hospital.
