Heavy downpour disrupts public life

Dhaka, 23 May, Abnews : Heavy downpours due to Kalbaishakhi squall have caused immense sufferings to many places in Dhaka, Barisal and Chittagong divisions throughout the country. Some 70mm rainwater was recorded in the capital since 6am to 12 noon, a Met office spokesman said here this noon, the city witnessed water logging in its different parts including Mirpur, Kazipara, Shewrapara, Kalyanpur, Mohammadpur, Town Hall, Asad Gate, Karwan Bazar, Moghbazar, Malibagh, Mouchak, Gulshan, Banani, Nayapaltan, Kakrail, Rayerbagh and Sanir Akhara areas.

Earlier, 83 mm rainfall was recorded in Madaripur, 78mm in Cox’s Bazar and 77mm in Chittagong in the last 24 hours till 6.00am. The maritime ports in Chittagong, Cox’s Bazar and Mongla were asked to hoist local cautionary signal No 3 due to deep convective cloud formation on the North Bay and its adjoining areas, Faridpur, Dhaka, Comilla, Noakhali, Patuakhali, Cox’s Bazar and Chittagong have been also asked to hoist riverine signal No 2, added the weather release.

All the fishing boats and trawlers over the North Bay have been advised to remain closed to the coast and proceed with caution till further notice. Meanwhile, sufferings to working people including commuters, professionals, office-goers have intensified, as public transports were very thin on the city streets. Witnesses said small business owners kept their businesses shut, as they could not go out due to torrential rain.
