Bangladesh wins Ambassadors’ Cup Cricket Tournament in Washington

Bangladeshs-CaptainDhaka, 08 September, Abnews : Bangladesh Embassy Cricket Team has won the champions trophy of the Ambassadors’ Cup Cricket Tournament here in USA. The Tournament, first ever in its kind in Washington DC, was jointly organized by the Embassies of New Zealand and Trinidad and Tobago on Saturday.

Teams from the Embassies of eight of the Test playing nations, namely, Australia, Bangladesh, India, New Zealand, South Africa, Sri Lanka, the United Kingdom and Trinidad & Tobago (West Indies) took part in the tournament. In the final match, the Tigers beat Australian Embassy team by 9 wickets in a game that they dominated from the beginning.

The ceremonial captain of the Bangladesh team Ambassador Akramul Qader won the toss and decided to field. Batting first, the Kangaroos scored a total of 76 for six wickets in their allocated ten overs. Hard-hitting batsman Gillum scored 36.

In response, Tigers made the winning total of 77 for the loss of only one wicket in 7 overs. Tauhidul Islam Rocy hit a spectacular 45-run innings with the help of three 6’s and 5 boundaries. He also gripped the highest-run scorer award of the tournament by scoring 84 runs in three matches. The award for highest wicket-taker of the tournament went to Muhammad Saqlain for six wickets in three matches.

Earlier in the day, Bangladesh beat New Zealand by ten wickets in the first match of the tournament. Tigers won the most exciting game of the day, their semi-final against Sri Lanka, by 4 wickets.

On the other hand, Australia won their quarter final and semi final matches against United Kingdom by 8 wickets and India by 10 runs respectively. The South Germantown Recreational Park (SGRP) in Maryland was in a festive mood. The players and a large number of audiences including the members of the diplomatic core and their families, the expatriate communities and the native enthusiasts kept the SGRP Cricket Field lively for the whole day. The trophies were handed over to the champion and runners’ up teams in a reception ceremony held in the Embassy of New Zealand Saturday evening.

The Ambassador of Bangladesh to the United States of America His Excellency Akramul Qader, in his reaction, thanked the New Zealand and Trinidad & Tobago Embassies for organizing the event and all the teams for their great efforts and sportsmanship. He congratulated the winning team and appreciated the Embassy family and the Bangladeshi community in greater Washington DC for their deep engagement and tireless efforts in achieving this great success.

He also expressed his heartfelt gratitude to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Bangladesh and the Bangladesh Cricket Board for their support in the background.
