She said this while inaugurating the newly constructed building of Dhaka Bar Association and laying foundation stone of Chief Judicial Magistrate Building on Dhaka Court premises here. Country’s democratic process was disrupted most of the time during transfer of power after 1975. Expressing her firm commitment to the constitutional rights of the people, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said the judiciary has been separated allowing its full independence as it was dictated by the constitution.

Our government always worked with an aim so that people are not deprived of getting justice and human rights, which was robbed of from me and my sister after 1975 by the military rulers and their remnants. Sheikh Hasina extended her thanks to the judges and lawyers for declaring the fifth amendment of the constitution illegal and ultra virus to the constitution saying the historic verdict has set a milestone in the country’s constitutional rule. The fifteenth amendment of the constitution has closed the holes of capturing power by any unelected and undemocratic force and ensuring bestowing the power only on the people through electoral process, she said.

The Prime Minister also expressed her thanks to the judiciary for accomplishing many difficult tasks to establish the rule of law in the country particularly holding the trial of the war crimes and Pilkhana massacre. Trial of the BDR mutiny was a difficult task where over 18,000 persons were indicted for mutiny and over 850 for murder, she said, the trial has delivered justice to the families of the victims. About the war crime trial, she said, “We will be blamed by future generation if we fail to accomplish the trial of the dreadful acts carried out by the local collaborators of the Pakistani force. She urged the youths to learn about the atrocities of the war criminals from the documents of available in the local and foreign sources and mould hatred against the criminals responsible for genocide, rape, arson and looting.

The Prime Minister said, after 1975, anti-liberation force and war criminals were at the helm of state power, which was a gloomy chapter of our victorious nation. Due to this reason, the country could not achieve expected development, she said. Terming the conviction of the war criminals is a comfort for the relatives of the martyrs, the Prime Minister said the verdict will surely be executed one day. Criticizing BNP and Jamaat government, the Prime Minister said, Awami League took forward the country economically and socially when it was in power from 1996-2001. But, the country moved backward in every sector during BNP-Jamaat’s last regime. BNP-Jamaat identified Bangladesh as a militant country and pushed back the country in every sector including food production, education, health, power and gas generation and industrial growth, she said.

Sheikh Hasina said her government has given economic comfort to the people by keeping the prices of essentials stable on the one hand and taking steps for increasing people’s income on the other. She urged the judges and the lawyers to exercise their duties with utmost sincerity and talents to ensure justice for all through best utilization of the government support.
